Lamb – Whole Grass-fed Deposit
Deposit for a whole, heritage-breed, grass-fed and grass-finished lamb. We never feed our sheep any type of grain. They are antibiotic-free, vaccine-free, and raised on pastures that are never treated with pesticides, herbicides (such as Roundup/glyphosate), or any other -icides.
We are proud to offer our heritage breed of Tunis sheep for sale by the whole lamb. Tunis sheep are unique as they are known as America’s oldest heritage sheep breed as they arrived in 1799 from North Africa as a gift from Tunisian royalty to prominent American leaders such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and even George Washington. They are a multipurpose sheep with cream colored wool and reddish-brown faces and legs.
The original Tunis flocks quickly spread throughout America and became a major breed in production for wool and meat until the Civil War when nearly the entire population was decimated. A small flock was hidden in North Carolina away from armies on the move. Seelye Brook Farms can trace its herd back to that small remnant flock. When you are enjoying Tunis lamb, you are enjoying a unique piece of American history.
Tunis lamb is known for its flavorful meat which is surprisingly tender and mild. These characteristics have earned the breed a place on Slow Food USA’s Ark of Taste. The lamb meat has been in continuous high demand in fine eating establishments in the United States, when it can be found.
Our family had never really experienced lamb before growing our own, but now it easily has become our meat of choice due to its tenderness, flavor, and versatility. We use it in place of ground beef or venison, and the stew meat is incredibly tender for those cold Winter days when you need a hearty meal.
For 2019, our whole lambs are $8/lb hanging weight. Plan for about 50-65lbs per lamb for hanging weight. Lamb is processed in early November.
Unlike most farms, we include basic processing fees and USDA inspection fees in our prices so you don’t have to worry about it.
We will send you an invoice via email after the processor gives us the weight of your lamb (minus your deposit, of course).
