About the Farm

Our Story

In the Fall of 2016, we packed up our suburban home and moved to a farm in order to pursue a new American dream with our four children. A dream of independence, nature, community, wellness, and family. On this site you will find content and products that we have procured to help you and your family achieve the same lifestyle of abundance we are seeking. We hope you will find a sense of hope, purpose, and community as we share this journey together.

Seelye (pronounced Seal-eee) Brook Farms is a regenerative farmstead located in central Minnesota. It is named for the small, peaceful brook that runs along the western edge of the property. The farm lies on 14 acres in Oak Grove, MN, about 45 minutes North of downtown Minneapolis between Blaine and Elk River. Not quite a suburban farm, not quite rural.

We purchased the farm in October 2016. The previous owner was selling due to health issues and could not keep up with the day-to-day operations even though he had scaled back to only two horses by the time the property switched hands. In the previous 23 years, the owner had up to 20 horses on the property and managed the property solely for horses. As a result, the sandy soil is compacted and infertile. The flora is lacking in diversity and resilience.

When the land switched hands, it contained a small garden, a few fruit trees, 24 chickens, two cats, and about a million pocket gophers.

Our goal is to regenerate this land through a permaculture approach. Permaculture isĀ the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient. In the words of its founder Bill Mollison, “PermacultureĀ is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted & thoughtful observation rather than protracted & thoughtless labor; of looking at plants & animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single-product system.” We plan to achieve land regeneration through properly designed ecological systems that impact each other with positive feedback. This includes no-till, deep mulch plantings and intensive rotational grazing of livestock for soil health.

Our children and their peers will use the land as a living classroom as they study biology, economics, animal husbandry, botany, and the whole host of topics that they become immersed in every single day while interacting with the real world as it presents itself on the farm.

The farm will serve as an educational resource to children and adults, amateurs and professionals, urban and rural. We strive to learn and apply the best methods for restorative agriculture and make the results of our grand experiments available to those interested with the highest of integrity. Our passion is for enabling every one to obtain nutrient-dense, clean food so they can be well in body, mind, and spirit.

Why the Plural Seelye Brook Farm(s)?

People ask why our farm’s name is plural. The reason is that our “farm” is not a traditional American farm. Typical farms are focused on monoculture. They are defined by the single crop or single animal in which they produce. We believe that the synergies of the agricultural ecosystem are what makes it productive, restorative, and resilient. As a result, naming our farm Seelye Brook Farm would not be accurate. Only in the cooperation of livestock, wild animals, plants, trees, soil, and orchards can a system be truly sustaining and fertile, which is our ultimate goal.

For Families. For Wellness. For Good.

Our motto is simple. We seek to restore a small part of the Earth for the benefit of reconnecting families like ours with it and its Creator. We seek this reconnection for the wellness of the people and the natural world they are surrounded by. We seek these ends for both our benefit and that of others, forever.

This website may occasionally include affiliate links, which means if you click on them and purchase a product we have recommended we will get a small portion of the profits. Don’t worry though, we don’t do this for any product that we wouldn’t purchase for ourselves. We don’t do this for merchants that we wouldn’t also patronize. It isn’t in our best interest to lose your trust in order to make a quick buck.

This website also serves as a place where we sell products that we have created. Seelye Brook Farms is a working farm. As part of our children’s entrepreneurial education and for supporting the everyday needs of the farm, we sell things at what we believe is a fair price.
